Data storage

Understand how MaxFlow stores project data both locally and embedded in 3ds Max scene files for seamless collaboration and portability.

Data Storage Overview

MaxFlow stores important data in two places: on your local computer and embedded inside the 3ds Max .max scene file. This dual approach keeps personal preferences and edit history available locally while ensuring the project's current state travels with the scene file.

How Data is Stored

All project-critical MaxFlow data required to reproduce the scene's current state is embedded as custom attributes inside the 3ds Max .max file. Personal preferences and historical metadata are kept locally on the author's machine. Specifically:

  • Local (computer) storage:
    • Personal settings and preferences
    • Attribute configuration presets
    • Scene state history
  • Embedded in the .max scene file:
    • State Configurations: lighting, camera, geometry and material setups
    • Render Settings: batch render configurations and output parameters
    • Node Networks: the complete node-based workflow and connections

Opening a saved .max scene automatically restores the embedded MaxFlow state, while local settings continue to personalize the experience for the current user.

Key Advantages

🔒 Seamless Integration

Project-critical state is bundled with the .max scene file while user preferences remain local. There is no need for separate databases or extra configuration files—team members can open the scene and immediately reproduce the intended result.

When you share your .max file with colleagues, the embedded MaxFlow state travels with it automatically—no extra file transfers required.

📦 Portability

  • Move scene files between machines and networks with confidence
  • Back up projects with a single file operation
  • Share complete project setups with collaborators without exporting extra assets

⚡ Performance

  • Faster scene load times for project state since it's embedded
  • Fewer external files reduces clutter and simplifies workflows
  • Local settings remain lightweight and personalized for each user

🛡️ Data Integrity

  • Reduces the risk of accidental separation of settings from scenes
  • Any .max backup or archive contains the embedded MaxFlow data
  • Each scene remains an independent, self-contained configuration
